Early Life and Education
Abubakar Malami, a Fulani Muslim, was born on April 17, 1967 in Birnin Kebbi, the capital of Kebbi State, Northern Nigeria.
His early formal education began at Nasarawa no Primary School, Birnin Kebbi before he completed his secondary school education at College of Arts and Arabic Studies.
In 1991, he graduated from Usmanu Danfodiyo University where he studied Law and was called to the bar in 1992. He is an alumnus of the University of Maiduguri, where he obtained his master’s degree in public administration in 1994.
After graduating, he became a legal practitioner, serving in various capacities including being a state counsel and magistrate in Kebbi State, Nigeria.

As a lawyer, Abubakar Malami has held a number of positions, including that of magistrate and attorney in Kebbi State. Additionally, he worked with the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) as its national legal adviser.
Less than 17 years after being admitted to the bar, in 2008, he received the prestigious status of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
He has also worked in a number of other positions, such as those of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Legal Team, Election Petition (2003), Kano State LG Election Tribunal (2004), and others. Malami worked as the CPC Presidential Campaign Organization’s Chairman Legal Team in 2011. He headed the legal team for the CPC Presidential Campaign Organization in 2013. He participated actively in the merger that created the APC and served as the CPC’s National Legal Adviser. The National Convention and Congress Committee (2013) included him as a member. He also served on the APC Electoral Committee for the 2013 governor of Anambra State election. Malami presided over the APC Kano State Congress Appeals Committee in May 2014.
In Kebbi State, he ran for the All Progressives Congress governorship ticket in the 2015 elections, but Abubakar Atiku Bagudu defeated him in the primary.
He became the youngest member of the federal executive council when, at the age of 48, he was named Minister for Justice and Attorney-General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Abubakar Malami was reappointed by President Buhari as the federation’s attorney general and minister of justice in August 2019.
