Eugenio Romerica Abunda Jr. was born on October 29, 1955, popularly known as Boy Abunda, is a Filipino professor, television host, publicist and talent manager.

He earned the title “Asia’s King of Talk” after his defunct program The Bottomline was hailed as the Best Talk Show for 2011 in the 16th Asian TV Awards.

Early Life and Education 

Eugenio Romerica Abunda Jr., also known as Boy Abunda, was born in Borongan. He majored in business management at Ateneo de Manila University. However, because of the passing of his father, he did not complete that course. He left Ateneo and found odd jobs to make ends meet.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts, Master of Arts in Communication Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy in Social Development from Philippine Women’s University between 2009 and 2016.

Boy Abunda Career

He performed onstage at the Metropolitan Theater before rising to the position of assistant stage manager. Later, he worked as Conchita “Tita Conching” Sunico’s assistant and learned public relations from her. In a few years, he founded Backroom, Inc., where he managed singers, actresses, and a public relations company.

He also served as a consultant in public relations for GMA Network. When Abunda was working in public relations for GMA, Bobby Barreiro, one of the company’s executives, suggested that he give presenting a television show a try.

Abunda started hosting Startalk, an entertainment talk show, and Show and Tell, a late-night variety chat show with Gretchen Barretto.

Later, in 1999, he relocated to GMA’s rival ABS-CBN, where he has since hosted the programs The Buzz, Private Conversations, Homeboy, Kontrobersyal, SNN: Showbiz News Ngayon, and the talk show interview The Bottomline with Boy Abunda.

He also anchors the late-night news program Bandila’s entertainment news segment. During the Angel Radyo era, he also worked as a radio pundit for DZAR. He is the founder and CEO of the talent management company Asian Artists Agency.

Additionally, he created the album Melodic Conversations. Abunda ended the rumors when, on December 15, 2022, he left ABS-CBN after 23 years and joined his former network, GMA Network, as part of the network’s layoffs triggered by the shutdown of ABS-CBN by the Philippine Congress, which rejected the new ABS-CBN legislative charter to operate. 

In 2023, he made a triumphant return to free-to-air television via Fast Talk with Boy Abunda. He did, however, come back to ABS-CBN to host the unique Anim na Dekada. Vilma, nag iisang.

Personal Life 

Abunda has been seeing partner Elmer “Bong” Quintana since 1983 and is an out gay man.

Abunda, a practicing Catholic and devoted follower of Marian, has expressed dissatisfaction with the Church’s stance on homosexuality and is a proponent of LGBT rights and same-sex marriage.

He condemned the 2016 Orlando Nightclub Shooting, which is known as the deadliest act of homophobic violence in American history.

Abunda started working as a part-time professor at Philippine Women’s University on June 23, 2010, instructing Communication Arts students in radio and television. He is presently a Quezon City resident.

Maria Fe Abunda, Abunda’s sister, is currently the congresswoman for Eastern Samar. She had previously been Borongan’s mayor. Abunda underwent hospitalization in 2014 for a liver condition.
