Diezani K. Alison-Madueke was born December 6, 1960, is a Nigerian politician and the first female President of OPEC.
She was chosen on November 27, 2014, at the 166th OPEC Ordinary Meeting in Vienna. On July 26, 2007, she was appointed Nigeria’s minister of transportation.
In 2008, she was transferred to Mines and Steel Development, and in April 2010, she was named Nigeria’s first female minister of petroleum resources.

Early Life and Education
Diezani K. Agama was born on December 6, 1960, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. Her father was Chief Frederick Abiye Agama. After the Nigerian civil war, she attended Hussey Model School after receiving her early education in Shell Camp.
She began her education in Port Harcourt’s Township School in 1968 before transferring to Holy Rosary Government Girls Secondary School, where she took the WASCE in 1975.
After completing her A’ Levels at the Federal School of Arts and Sciences in Mubi, Gongola State (now Adamawa State), she travelled to the UK in 1977 to pursue a career in architecture.
She started studying architecture while in the UK, but then transferred to Howard University in the US.
On December 8th, 1992, she received her bachelor’s degree from Howard. She attended Cambridge Judge Business School in 2002 to earn her MBA. Diezani is the recipient of the Chevening award.

In 1992, she went back to Nigeria and joined Shell Petroleum Development Corporation, where she worked as an architectural consultant and in the company’s estates division at the Lagos office.
In 1997, she attained the role of Head of Civil Infrastructures before advancing to lead the Corporate Issues and Crisis Management Unit. In 2004, after completing her MBA at Cambridge, she was appointed Lead Joint Ventures Representation Adviser.
In 2006, Shell appointed Alison-Madueke as an Executive Director. She was the first woman ever to hold the position of Executive Director for Shell in Nigeria.
Alison-Madueke has served in the Nigerian federal government in three key capacities. In July 2007, she was appointed minister of transportation. She was appointed Minister of Mines and Steel Development on December 23, 2008.
The cabinet was disbanded on March 17, 2010, and a new one was sworn in on April 6, 2010, with Alison-Madueke serving as the Minister for Petroleum Resources. Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan has been acting president since February 2010, when he took over.
On June 1, 2015, Diezani stepped down from her position as president in order to make way for Jonathan’s replacement. She later started working as a Trade and Investment Commissioner for the Commonwealth of Dominica.
Alison-Madueke promised to overhaul Nigeria’s oil and gas sector so that all Nigerians would profit from her appointment as Minister of Petroleum Resources.
President Goodluck Jonathan signed the Nigerian Content Act in April 2010 in an effort to counter the dominance of foreign companies in the petroleum industry by increasing the proportion of contracts going to indigenous Nigerian companies.
The government’s plan to end state subsidies on petrol prices was one of the most divisive initiatives under Alison-Madueke.
Because the subsidy “imposes a huge financial burden on the government, disproportionately benefits the wealthy, [and] encourages inefficiency, corruption, and the diversion of scarce public resources away from investment in critical infrastructure,” Alison-Madueke advocated ending the subsidy.
In October 2010, Alison-Madueke became the first woman to lead a nation’s delegation at the semi-annual OPEC summit. She was the first woman to serve as Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources.
She was also Nigeria’s first female transport minister and the first woman to be appointed to the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria board of directors. She was chosen to serve as OPEC’s first female president on November 27, 2014.
In regards to working in industries with a preponderance of men, Alison-Madueke said she counselled the young women she mentored at Shell to “change their mode of thinking.”
Personal Life
She has been married to Admiral Allison Madueke (retired), a former chief of the naval staff and former governor of the states of Imo and Anambra, since 1999. One biological son and five adopted children, including Chimezie Madueke and Ogonna Madueke, make up her six-child family.
Alison-Madueke received an honorary doctorate in management sciences from the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna in September 2011. She is the first female to receive such a prize. The incident happened at the 58th Regular Course Cadet’s graduation ceremony.
Alison-Madueke disclosed that she had been receiving treatment for breast cancer in the UK while she was in office. At her home in Abuja with her son Chimezie Madueke in September 2008, Alison-Madueke was the target of an unsuccessful kidnapping attempt.
