Early Life and Education
Douye Diri was born on June 4, 1959, he is a indigene Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa state, Nigeria.
First School Leaving Certificate recipient Douye Diri started his early education at Okoro Primary School in Sampou and finished it in 1977 at Rev. Proctor Memorial Primary School in Kaiama. Later, he went to Bayelsa’s Government Secondary School in Odi.
The National Certificate in Education (NCE), which Douye attained in 1985, was earned while he was a student at the College of Education in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State. He also studied at the University of Port-Harcourt, where in 1990 he earned a B.Ed in political science.
Douye Diri Career
Before entering politics, Douye held teaching positions in a number of government institutions in Rivers State.
During the administrations of President Goodluck Jonathan and Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, he was named executive secretary of the Centre for Youth Development and commissioner for youth and sports in Bayelsa State.
Diri was a member of the University of Maiduguri’s governing council from 2000 until 2012. In 2012, he served as the head of Bayelsa State’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Disciplinary Council.
He was promoted to the position of Principal Executive Secretary at Government House in August 2012 after being appointed as the deputy chief of staff there. He held this position until 2014, when he resigned to run for the House of Representatives seat representing Kolokuma, Opokuma, and Yenagoa Federal Constituency.
He was chosen to serve in the 9th National Assembly of Nigeria in 2015 and represented the Bayelsa Central senatorial constituency of that state. He ran for governor of Bayelsa in 2019 as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate.
On February 14th, 2020, he won the election and was sworn in as governor of Bayelsa State. A tribunal in Abuja ordered Douye, the state governor, to be fired on August 17, 2020.
On October 2, 2020, the court of appeal in Abuja overturned this decision, and he continued to serve as the state’s governor.
Controversy
In August 2021, it was revealed that Diri and his supporters had attempted to board the first United Nigeria Airlines flight from Lagos to Yengoa by pushing their way through security checks at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
