Early Life and Education
Gabriel Suswam was born on November 15, 1964 in Anyiin, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. He was accepted into the University of Lagos’ Law Faculty in 1986.
He graduated with an LL.B. in 1989 and a BL Certificate in 1990 from the Nigerian Law School in Lagos. In that year, he received his bar call. Between 1990 and 1994, he worked for various legal firms while pursuing his education. He established his own legal practise in 1994.
Senator Gabriel Suswam Career
He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1999, having run on the ticket of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), representing the Katsina-Ala/Ukum/Logo Federal Constituency.
He was named Chairman of the House Committee on FCT after serving as Chairman of the House Services Committee. In 2003, he ran once more and won reelection.
He was named Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations on July 3, 2003, then Chairman of the House Committee on Power in August 2005. He was chosen as Benue State’s governor in April 2007.
He advocated for the automatic reelection of all political office holders who demonstrated excellence in the performance of their duties in November 2009. In a another interview, he claimed that the main thing working against the state’s growth ever since it was founded was politics.
In the 26 April 2011 gubernatorial elections, Suswam ran on the PDP ticket for a second term. With 590,776 votes, he defeated Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate Professor Torkuma Ugba, who received 499,319 votes.
Gabriel Torwua Suswam lost to All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief Barnabas Gemade in the general elections held on March 28, 2015.
