Gyedu-Blay Ambolley was born on March 11, 1947, in Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana. He was exposed to a wide variety of musical influences from an early age, including as highlife, jazz, funk, and traditional Ghanaian music.
He went to the College of Music in Accra to deepen his musical training by studying music theory and composition.
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley Career
Before Soundway Records placed Gyedu-Blay Ambolley’s iconic Simigwa-Do, which Ambolley released in 1973, on their first anthology, Ghana Soundz, he was mostly unknown outside of West Africa.
Many have referred to Ambolley as the father of hiplife, the combination of highlife and hip hop, due to his musical style. At the Los Angeles Playboy Jazz Festival, Ambolley stood to the side of AL Threats.Simigua-do, a song he recorded in 1973, is regarded as the first Ghanaian rendition of American rap that had previously been popular worldwide.
The few musicians who saw a future for high-life music in the late 1960s and early 1970s were Ambolley, Sammy Lartey, and Ebo Taylor. They helped to change the genre by merging high-life, funk, and jazz music.
Ambolley was honoured for his services to Ghanaian music in the US with a commendation from the City Council of Philadelphia in June 2015, which was read by Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell and Hon. Stanley J. Staughter.
