Early Life and Education
Keir Alexander Mather was born in 1998 in Hull. Mather grew up in Brough, East Yorkshire, and was named for Keir Hardie, the man who started the Labour Party. He had founded a Hull Labour organisation for young people and had formerly been a member of the Youth Parliament.
He studied history and politics at Wadham College before earning a Master of Public Policy (MPP) at University College, earning both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Oxford.
He participated in a programme at Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government that was “open to applicants from the UK and Republic of Ireland who intend to run for public office” while pursuing an MPP as a Political Leadership Scholar.
He served as the head of research for the Oxford Union Debating Society while a student there. He was also the co-chair of the Oxford University Labour Club.

Keir Mather spent 18 months as a public relations advisor for the Confederation of British Industry before being elected to the Parliamentary House. From 2019 to 2020, he worked as a parliamentary researcher for Wes Streeting.
In a by-election called on July 20, 2023 as a result of the resignation of the Conservative MP Nigel Adams, Mather won Selby and Ainsty in North Yorkshire.
The previous majority of 20,137 votes won by Adams in the 2019 general election was the largest ever overcome by Labour in a by-election and the largest swing in favour of a Labour candidate since the 1994 Dudley West by-election.
At the age of 25, Mather succeeded Nadia Whittome (born 1996) as the House’s youngest member of parliament, earning the nickname “the Baby of the House.”
