Early Life and Education
Irabor was born in Aliokpu Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria on October 5, 1965.
He was accepted into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Kaduna as a student of the 34 Regular Course in 1983, and on June 28, 1986, he received his commission as a second lieutenant into the Nigerian Army’s Signals Corps.
Irabor took civic and military courses both domestically and overseas. He attended the Ghana Armed Forces Staff College, Teshi, Accra, Ghana for the Senior Staff Course in 2000/2001, among other institutions, and the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji (AFCSC) for his Junior Staff Course in 1995.
He also studied at the Harvard Kennedy Schools of Government and Executive Education in the United States in 2012 and 2017, as well as the National Defence College in Bangladesh in 2010.
Irabor possesses two master’s degrees from the University of Ghana and the Bangladesh University of Professionals, Dhaka, in addition to a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University.

He was accepted into the 34 Regular Course at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna in 1983, and on June 28, 1986, he received his commission as a Second Lieutenant into the Nigerian Army’s Signals Corps.
He was the TRADOC, Minna Commander of the Nigerian Army’s Training and Doctrine Command. He oversaw training and operations in the Nigerian Armed Forces while serving as the Chief of Training and Operations at Defense headquarters, which was run by the then-Chief of Defence Staff.
Major General Leo Irabor served as the Multinational Joint Task Force’s Force Commander in the Lake Chad Basin Area and a Theatre Commander in Operation Lafia Doyle against Boko Haram in the northern part of Nigeria. Additionally, he presided over COVID-19 as Chairman Assembly of First Nations (AFN).
Following the departure of the service chiefs, President Muhammad Buhari named him as the Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff on January 26, 2021.
