Mele Kolo Kyari was born on January 8, 1965, is a Nigerian geologist, crude oil marketer and 1st Group Chief executive officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum company limited (NNPC limited).
Prior to being appointed, Kyari served as the NNPC’s Group General Manager for its Crude Oil Marketing Division and, starting in 2018, as Nigeria’s National Representative to OPEC.
Early Life and Education
Mele Kyari was born in Maiduguri, Borno State, on January 8, 1965. Between 1977 and 1982, he attended Government Community Secondary School Biu in Borno State.
He graduated from the University of Maiduguri with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in geology and earth science in 1987.

Mele Kyari Career
Mele Kyari was chosen by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to serve as the 19th GMD of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation after Maikanti Baru retired from the company on July 7, 2019.
He started working with Integrated Data Services Limited in 1991 and became a geophysicist for NNPC. He began working as a Field Geologist with the Department of Geological Survey of Nigeria in 1991.
In 1998, he was employed by the National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS) as an exploration geophysicist. Kyari oversaw the Management of Production Sharing Contracts for the Crude Oil Marketing Division (COMD) in 2007.
He was promoted to the position of Group General Manager, COMD in 2015 after being appointed General Manager, Crude Oil Stock Management in 2014.
He serves as the main point of contact for the Open Government Initiative, which assists the government in keeping track of the buyers and sellers of crude oil. He was appointed the Nigerian National Representative at OPEC on May 13, 2018.
Award and Recognition
- Order of the Federal Republic (OFR): In October 2022, Kyari received the national honour of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) from President Muhammadu Buhari.
- Outstanding Employer of the Year 2022 Award: In April 2023, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) recognized Kyari as the outstanding employer of the year 2022.
