Early Life and Education
Shaibu was born on December 1, 1969, in Kaduna to a Christian family. His mother was Lucy Momoh, and his father was the late Pastor Francis Osikpomobo Shaibu. He had a solid Christian upbringing.
Shaibu began his education at St. Augustine Primary School in Tundu Wada Kaduna and completed it at L.E.A Primary School in Barnawa, Kaduna State, where he earned his First School Leaving Certificate. Shaibu then attended Saudana Memorial Secondary School in Kawo Kaduna, where he later earned his West African Senior School Certificate.
Comrade Shaibu earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Benin in 2015 after earning a Bachelor of Science degree (Honours) in Accounting from the University of Jos in 2000, where he also served as President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) between 2000 and 2001.
Philip Shaibu Career
After finishing school, he began working for the Nigerian Prisons Service in Abuja. However, in 2002, he voluntarily withdrew from that position so that he could enter full-time politics.
In 2003, Philip Shaibu entered politics for the first time when he ran unsuccessfully for the Edo State House of Assembly on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
On the Action Congress (AC) platform, Shaibu ran for office once more in 2007 and won the election to serve the good people of Etsako West Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly. He was elected as the majority leader on February 24, 2010, while serving in the Edo State House of Assembly, following the impeachment of Speaker Rt. Hon. Zakawanu Garuba.
After serving for eight years in the Edo state House of Assembly, he ran for and won the Etsako Federal constituency House of Representatives seat in 2015 by outpolling his closest rival, Abbas Braimah of the Peoples Democratic party, who received 29,941 votes.
He was unanimously chosen as Godwin Obaseki’s running partner in the 2016 Edo State gubernatorial election, and the pair ultimately prevailed. They were inaugurated in as governors on November 12, 2016. Shaibu resigned from the All Progressives Congress on June 16, 2020.
