Sixto Diaz Rodriguez was born on July 10, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan. He was the sixth child of working-class Mexican immigrants.
Since he was their sixth child, they gave him the name Sixto (pronounced “Seex-toh”). His mother was Native American, and his father had immigrated to the US from Mexico in the 1920s. They had come to the Midwest to work in Detroit’s industries, joining a huge wave of Mexican immigrants.
