Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi OFR (May 10, 1936 – August 29, 2023) was a Nigerian civil servant who was best known for designing Nigeria’s national flag. He was commonly referred to as Mr. Flag Man.

Early Life and Education
Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi was born in Ibadan, of Yoruba origin, the older of a set of twins. Before moving to the Northern region of Nigeria, he spent his first eight years living with his father. His early education started in the North.
Upon returning to the West after his father’s retirement, he reapplied for admission at the Ibadan, Nigeria Baptist Day School, Idi-Ikan. He received a very good education at Ibadan Grammar School (IGS), where he transferred after completing his studies at Baptist Day School Idi-kan in 1949.
Taiwo Akinkunmi Career
In 1955, Akinkunmi resigned from IGS and accepted a position as an agriculturist in the Western Region Secretariat in Ibadan. He would subsequently labour for a while before being accepted to Lambeth College in London, now known as Norwood Technical College, where he studied electrical engineering.
During his time there for school, he created the Nigerian flag. In 1963, he returned to Nigeria and went back to the Ibadan secretariat’s agriculture department to finish what he had started. Up until 1994, he was employed by the government before being appointed assistant superintendent of agriculture.
On September 29, 2014, at the Conference Centre Abuja, he received honours including the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and the title of honorary life presidential adviser.
Akinkunmi participated in the competition that he discovered at a library. According to him, “I took specifics of what is [to be] expected to create a flag that would be used by a country that was about to witness [its] independence. I entered the contest, and in 1958, my design was chosen as the winner. In Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state, Akinkunmi displayed the largest national flag in history.
