Early Life and Education
Tunji Olaopa was born to the family of Festus Adeyemo Olaopa and Beatrice Okebola While Olaopa in Aáwé, Oyo State, Nigeria on December 20, 1959. The family belonged to the lower middle class.
Olaopa graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science in 1984 and an MSc in the same field in 1987 from the University of Ibadan in Oyo State.
In 2006, he earned a PhD in Public Administration from the United Kingdom’s Commonwealth Open University.
Tunji Olaopa Career
Olaopa worked as the State House in Abuja’s Chief Research Officer, Policy Analyst, and Speechwriter. In addition, he served as the White Paper Panel’s Assistant Director/Secretary, overseeing the reform’s execution as it related to Nigeria’s Ayida Public Service Reform of 1995.
In the Federal Ministry of Education, he has also held the positions of Head of the Policy Division and Coordinator of the Education Sector Analysis in the Office of the Minister.
He was the Technical Secretariat’s Deputy Director/Head, Reform Strategy Team, Management Services Office, for a brief period of time. He has also served as the Bureau of Public Service Reforms’ Director of Programmes.
Olaopa also served as the Head of Service for Nigeria’s Public Service Reforms’ Special Assistant on Reforms.
In addition, he held the positions of Director of the MDAs Department in the Bureau of Public Service Reforms and Director of External Linkages & Reforms at the Office of Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
In the Nigerian Civil Service, he worked his way up to the rank of Permanent Secretary, holding positions at the Federal Ministry of Communications Technology, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, and the State House in Abuja.
In 2016, he retired from the public service and founded the Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy.
Awards and Recognitions
Olaopa received the National Productivity Award in 2015 and, during the University of Texas at Austin’s Africa conference in early 2018, the Thabo Mbeki Award for Public Service and Scholarship.
He was appointed a professor of public administration at Lead City University in Ibadan, Nigeria, in July of 2018.
