Tyla Laura Seethal was born January 30, 2002, known professionally as Tyla, is a South African singer, songwriter and dancer. She was born and reared in Johannesburg, and in 2021, following the domestic success of her debut single “Getting Late” with Kooldrink, she signed with Epic Records.
With the release of her single “Water” in 2023, which became famous on TikTok as a result of a trending dance challenge, Tyla earned international recognition. She has one South African Music Award nomination.
Early Life and Education
Tyla was born on January 30, 2002, in Johannesburg, South Africa to a Coloured family of Zulu, Indian, Mauritian and Irish descent. She graduated from Edenglen High School in 2019 and served as the department’s head of culture during that time.
She began by posting original songs and covers to her Instagram account and submitting them to various people in the music business. She was later found by her first manager, who set up her first recording sessions.
Tyla Career
Early in 2021, Tyla released her debut single, “Getting Late,” which featured Kooldrink’s production and was a big hit across the country. She subsequently agreed to a recording deal with Epic Records via a partnership with Fax Records in the US.
The accompanying music video was a 2022 South African Music Awards finalist for Music Video of the Year. She released the songs “To Last” and “Overdue” as a follow-up to this work.
Following the release of her track “Been Thinking,” which gave Tyla her first career chart placement on the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, she made her stage debut in 2023 at Milan Fashion Week. It was dubbed a “slick club anthem that channels the seductive pop-R&B hits of mid-2000s Ciara and Rihanna” by Pitchfork’s Heven Haile.
As Chris Brown’s opening act for the European portion of his Under the Influence Tour, Tyla then joined him. She published the song “Girl Next Door” in 2023 with Ayra Starr, a singer from Nigeria.
In August 2023, she also made “Water” available as the first single off her impending first extended play. This gave rise to a trending dance challenge on the social media site TikTok, where it was featured in more than 50,000 videos.
On the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart, the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart, and the New Zealand Hot Singles Chart, the single reached the top 10.
