Early Life and Education
Al-makura was born around 1952 in Lafia, Nasarawa State as a member of the Gwandara ethnic Group.
He studied from 1959 to 1966 at Dunama Primary School in Lafia, from 1967 to 1971 at Keffi Teacher’s College, and from 1972 to 1975 at Government Teachers College of Education in Uyo. He worked as an assistant producer at the Broadcasting Corporation of Northern Nigeria for a brief time in 1975.
He continued his education at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria from 1975 to 1978, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education. He worked as a teacher at the Government College in Makurdi as part of his National Youth Service.
He established Almakura Nigeria Limited in 1978 to import and maintain industrial and agricultural gear. As the owner and chairman of Ta’al Nigeria Limited, which has properties in Abuja, Lagos, Kano, and Washington, D.C., he later entered the real estate and property development industries. He is the owner of the Ta’al Conference Hotel in Lafia and the Ta’al Lake Resort in Abuja.
Umaru Tanko Al-Makura Career
Almakura was appointed the National Party of Nigeria’s (NPN) youth leader in the former Plateau State in 1980.
He was chosen to serve in the Constitutional Assembly in 1988–1989 as the representative of the Lafia–Obi Federal Constituency in what is now Nasarawa State.
From 1990 to 1992, he served as the state secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC) party in Plateau State. In Nasarawa State in 1998, Al-makura was a founding member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Al-Makura, who is thought to be worth $50 million, defected from the PDP after finishing last in the race for governor of Nasarawa.
Al-Makura won the April 26, 2011 election for governor of Nigeria’s Nasarawa State while standing on the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) ticket. Aliyu Akwe-Doma, the PDP’s current governor, was beaten by him.
