Festus Egwarewa Keyamo was born on 21 January 1970, is a Nigerian lawyer, columnist and human rights activist.

Keyamo was chosen to lead strategic communications for President Buhari’s 2019 reelection campaign in April 2018.

On August 4, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu submitted Keyamo’s name as a cabinet nominee for approval to the Senate.

Early Life and Education 

Festus Keyamo was born on January 21, 1970, in Ughelli, a town in Delta State southern Nigeria but his father hails from Effurun, a city in Delta.

Keyamo attended Model basic School for his basic school and Government College in Ughelli for his senior education. In 1986, he earned his West African School Certificate there.

He then went on to Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, southern Nigeria’s Edo State, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in law in 1992 and was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in December 1993.

Festus Keyamo Career 

Festus Keyamo began his legal career in 1993 at Gani Fawehinmi’s Chambers in Lagos State, southwestern Nigeria. He stayed at Gani Fawehinmi’s chambers for two years before leaving to start Festus Keyamo Chambers.

He served as the principal attorney in the treason trial of Ralph Uwazuruike, the head of the Movement For The Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), as well as Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, the leader of the Niger-Delta Peoples’ Volunteer Force, who was charged with a treasonable felony. Keyamo was also a witness in Bola Ige’s murder.

He sued the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2008 over the improper selection of service chiefs.

Festus was one of the second administrations of President Muhammadu Buhari’s nominees for minister.

The senate similarly screened him after his nomination. Keyamo was appointed as Nigeria’s Minister of State for the Niger Delta on August 21, 2019, and served in that capacity until September 24, when President Muhammadu Buhari transferred him to the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

On August 4, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu forwarded Keyamo’s name to the Senate as a cabinet nominee for confirmation in response to repeated inquiries from various political observers over why he didn’t make both the first and second ministerial lists. 

Awards and Recognitions

In July 2017, Festus Keyamo was chosen by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC), Nigeria, as one of the top Nigerian solicitors to get the rank of SAN. 

He previously served in Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet. Inducted into the elevated league of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) in September 2017 were Keyamo and other individuals listed on the 2017 SAN-list.

Keyamo also received the Global Human Rights Award in 2017 from the United States Global Leadership Council in Washington in recognition of his long-term work to defend and promote human rights and push for accountable governance in Nigeria.
